TEXAS CITY, Texas – A Civil War cannon from the 1863 sinking of the USS Westfield will be part of a Southeast Texas museum just miles from where the ship went down.
Preservation experts at Texas A&M University in College Station on Tuesday unveiled the restore 12-foot cannon. The more than 4-ton cannon is being hauled by truck with arrival scheduled Wednesday at the Texas City Museum.
The gunboat was scuttled by its Union crew during the 1863 Battle of Galveston. The cannon and other artifacts were recovered in 2009 during expansion of the Texas City Ship Channel.
The museum is about 6 miles from where the vessel sank.
A&M project manager Justin Parkoff says the cannon is part of the first phase of the museum display, with more restored pieces to follow.
