ATLANTA – The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating why an air traffic controller first instructed a commercial jet to interrupt its landing at Atlanta's international airport and then quickly reversed the order after the pilot had already changed course.
FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said Friday that a controller had instructed the pilot of Delta Airlines Flight 630 to make a "missed approach" but then quickly canceled that order and re-cleared the plane to land at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Wednesday. Bergen says a missed approach occurs when a pilot or an air traffic controller decides a landing cannot be completed.
Bergen says the pilot was unable to continue with the initial landing but did land safely on second approach.
Delta's website shows that Flight 630 originates from Detroit.
