Seattle student credited with stopping campus gunman has wedding registry, honeymoon paid for by strangers

The Seattle Pacific University student who witnesses say tackled a campus gunman during a deadly shooting Thursday reportedly has had his wedding registry and honeymoon paid for by strangers after accounts of his heroics spread on Twitter.

Jon Meis, a 26-year-old electrical engineering student, pepper-sprayed the gunman, identified as Aaron R. Ybarra, as he went to reload his gun after shooting three students, killing one.

Meis then put the shooter in a chokehold until other students rushed to help, The Seattle Times reported. Police say without Meis’ quick action there could have been more victims.

“He was hellbent on killing a lot of people today,” a law enforcement source told the paper.

As the story circulated on social media, a Twitter user reportedly shared a link to Meis’ wedding registry he set up with his fiancé.

According to the couple’s page created on TheKnot.com, he and his fiancé, Kaylie, registered at Target and Crate & Barrel for their upcoming June 21, 2014 wedding.

When the registries were completed, a crowdfunding campaign to pay for the couple's honeymoon was set up by another user who wanted to show support for Meis, BuzzFeed.com reported.

As of early Saturday, more than $11,000 had been raised for the couple.

“I’m proud of the selfless actions that my roommate, Jon Meis, showed today taking down the shooter,” fellow student Matt Garcia wrote on Twitter Thursday. “He is a hero.”

Police saying it remains unclear why Ybarra, who is not a student at the private Christian university, targeted the school.

The leafy campus of the private, Christian university about 10 minutes north of downtown Seattle was quiet the morning after the shooting, with a service held at midday. People stopped by a makeshift memorial near Otto Miller Hall to pay their respects.

Seattle Mayor Ed Murray identified the student killed as Paul Lee, a “Korean-American student with a bright future.”

The victims included a seriously wounded 19-year-old woman who remained in intensive care after a five-hour surgery, as well as a 24-year-old man who was discharged from the hospital.
