A suburban Houston police officer is hospitalized in serious condition after falling 20 to 30 feet from a bridge during a traffic stop.

Missouri City police say Officer Kenneth Lewis and another officer had pulled over a driver just after midnight and were on the side of the highway when another vehicle slammed into their patrol car.

Police Lt. Paul Poulton says it’s not immediately clear if Lewis was thrown from the bridge by the impact of the crash or jumped to get out of the way.

He was taken by helicopter to a Houston hospital.

Authorities say the driver of the car in the initial stop also was hurt and taken to a hospital. They say the crash is under investigation and it’s possible alcohol was a factor.
