Prosecutor: Minnesota homeowner who shot teens always intended to kill

LITTLE FALLS, Minn. – Prosecutors say a Minnesota man who shot two teenagers who broke into his home had always planned to take their lives.

Closing arguments began Tuesday in the trial of Byron Smith. The 65-year-old retired security engineer faces multiple murder counts in the deaths of 17-year-old Nick Brady and 18-year-old Haile (HAY'-lee) Kifer.

Smith says he was defending himself when the teens broke into his home on Thanksgiving Day 2012.

But prosecutor Pete Orput told jurors the killings were premeditated. He said the way Smith set himself up in his basement that day was almost like deer hunting, with the chair Smith sat in like a deer stand.

Smith shot the unarmed teens a total of nine times as they descended the stairs into his basement.
