Federal authorities say a Washington state man plotted to blow up a Wal-Mart and two gas stations with "maximum loss of life" so he could rob three banks while emergency responders were diverted.

FBI agents arrested 53-year-old Larry Gillette, of Shelton, on Monday as he met with an undercover agent and attempted to ignite a car bomb. The bomb was inoperable.

The U.S. attorney's office says Gillette was scheduled to appear in federal court in Tacoma on Tuesday on charges of solicitation to commit a crime of violence and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Authorities say the FBI learned about the plot while Gillette was serving a prison sentence for identity theft. An undercover agent befriended him after his April 14 release.
