Tsunami advisory for Hawaii cancelled after large earthquake off coast of northern Chile

HONOLULU – A tsunami advisory for Hawaii is being canceled after a large earthquake that struck off the coast of Chile.

Hawaii's tsunami advisory was lifted about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, the National Weather Service said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center reported a slight rise in tide levels for the Big Island and Maui, stemming from the 8.2-magnitude quake that struck Tuesday off northern Chile.

Tsunami wave heights across the state are continuing to diminish, the weather officials said.

Honolulu officials closed Oahu's popular Hanauma Bay Wednesday as a precaution.

Boaters and swimmers were cautioned about smaller sea-level changes and strong currents.

On Tuesday night, U.S. officials said they found no threat of a tsunami along the coasts of Alaska, California, Oregon or Washington.
