MINNEAPOLIS – The family of an exchange student from Pakistan who has been comatose since a November crash is trying to prevent a Minnesota hospital from sending him back to his home country.
Muhammad Shahzaib Bajwa (SHAH'-zay-eeb BAHJ'-wah) was spending a semester at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. He and his friends were driving back from Minneapolis when their car struck a deer Nov. 13.
He had severe facial fractures and went into cardiac arrest at a Cloquet (klo-KAY') hospital, causing brain damage.
He has been hospitalized at Essentia Health-St. Mary's Medical Center in Duluth.
Bajwa's brother, Shahraiz, says the hospital is pressuring him and his mother to agree to flying Bajwa back to Pakistan.
A hospital spokeswoman says Bajwa can't stay in the U.S. legally after his student visa expires Feb. 28.
