RIVERSIDE, Calif. – A former Guatemalan special forces soldier is expected to be sentenced in Southern California for lying on his U.S. citizenship forms about his alleged role in the 1982 massacre of at least 160 people.
Jorge Sosa will appear in a federal court in Riverside for a sentencing hearing Monday.
Prosecutors are seeking to strip Sosa of his American citizenship and have him sentenced to 10 years in prison for failing to disclose his alleged role in the Dos Erres massacre.
Sosa's lawyer says the former martial-arts instructor should only face a 12-month sentence for what is essentially a fraud conviction.
Sosa is one of four former Guatemalan soldiers arrested by U.S. authorities. He was detained in Canada, where he is also a citizen, and extradited to the U.S.
