A 5-year-old girl was killed Wednesday when she was struck by at least one stray bullet that entered her home in north Omaha, authorities said.

The girl, identified as Payton Benson, was found by Omaha officers as they followed up on multiple reports of gunshots around 9:45 a.m., said police spokesman Michael Pecha in a news release.

Payton was taken to Creighton University Medical Center in extremely critical condition, according to Pecha. She later died from her injuries. Authorities have not released additional details about the shooting and say the investigation is ongoing.

No arrests have been reported. A police press conference was scheduled for Wednesday night.

A family relative, Massey Allen III, said the young girl was eating breakfast at the time of the shooting. Allen said he was near the shooting and estimated about 20 shots were fired.

Omaha City Councilman Ben Gray said the girl's father is his nephew.
