BALTIMORE – A former Army soldier accused of trying to provide support to a terrorist organization in Somalia after he left the military has been sentenced to seven years in prison in connection with the case.
Craig Baxam of Laurel was sentenced Monday in federal court in Baltimore. As part of a deal, Baxam pleaded guilty Monday to destroying records that might be used in a terrorism investigation, acknowledging he destroyed his computer before leaving the country in 2011.
Baxam was arrested soon after in Kenya. Prosecutors say he was on his way to neighboring Somalia to join the terrorist group al-Shabab, and he was charged with attempting to provide material support and resources to the group. Prosecutors dropped that charge as part of the plea deal.
