Police have discovered a body in the ruins of a Minneapolis apartment fire that left 14 people injured, authorities announced Thursday.
At least three of the injured remained in critical condition. Before the discovery of the body, authorities had said two people were unaccounted for.
Fire Chief John Fruetel said Thursday that authorities were looking at a possible natural gas leak as the cause of the explosion and fire that destroyed the three-story building, though it's still under investigation. Frutel said witnesses told investigators they smelled an odor and the debris field from the blast also points to a possible gas explosion.
Ten victims from Wednesday's fire at a three-story building that houses a grocery store and apartments were taken to Hennepin County Medical Center. The hospital said that six victims are in satisfactory condition and one person has been released. The victims suffered burns, broken bones or both.
Fire officials said six people were critically injured and some victims were taken to Fairview University hospital. Spokeswoman Jennifer Amundson said Thursday she could not release any information.
The scene was chaotic, with some residents choosing to jump out of their windows to escape from the flames.
No fatalities have been reported, but authorities aren't sure whether any residents are still inside the building. Its roof had partially collapsed, making it too dangerous for firefighters to enter.
Abdi Bihi, a community advocate in the area, told Fox 9 that two people who live in the building are unaccounted for. Fire officials,however, could not confirm that number.
