MOUNT WASHINGTON, N.H. – New Hampshire officials say two people were rescued after triggering an 800-foot avalanche slide on Mount Washington.
U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Colleen Mainville says the two unknowingly entered an avalanche area known as "the Lip" and triggered the avalanche Saturday that carried them over rocks, cliffs and icy snow surfaces into the bottom of Tuckerman's Ravine.
She says they were treated for bumps and bruises on the mountain and one appeared to have a broken arm.
Officials from the Appalachian Mountain Club say the rescue began at about 8:30 p.m. Saturday and ended early Sunday morning.
The U.S. Forest Service reports that avalanche danger in the ravine is moderate to low, but that avalanches triggered by hikers are possible.
