SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. – A decade after a Christmas Day mudslide swept through a Southern California church mountain retreat, worshippers have continued their mission at a new spot.
Fourteen people — including nine children — were killed in 2003 when a wave of water, boulders and debris tore through a campground in the foothills of San Bernardino east of Los Angeles.
The Riverside Press-Enterprise reports (http://bit.ly/JdsS3G ) members of the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church and Foundation have since held summer camp in nearby Crestline. The group no longer holds winter sessions.
The campground at Waterman Canyon was razed five years ago after vandals started a fire in a building.
The church still owns the 45-acre property, but it doesn't have the insurance to rebuild.
