Sheriff's deputy fatally shot while serving warrant at Central Texas home, suspects in custody

CALDWELL, Texas – A sheriff's deputy has been fatally shot while serving a warrant at a home in Central Texas.

The Burleson County Sheriff's Office says Sgt. Adam Sowders (SOH'-ders) died shortly before 6 a.m. Thursday.

A statement from the sheriff's office in Caldwell, about 70 miles northeast of Austin, says suspects are in custody. Sheriff's spokeswoman Christine Labertew (LAH'-ber-too) had no immediate information on how many people were detained and she declined to describe the purpose of the warrant.

She says a team of officers "took fire" while entering the residence in south Burleson County, and that this is when Sowders was shot. Labertew says nobody else was hurt.
