Authorities at a North Carolina university say no students or university staff were involved in a shooting near the entrance to the school.

A statement from Wingate University said local law enforcement was investigating a shooting that took place Wednesday on a street near the southeastern entrance to the campus, located in the town of Wingate approximately 30 miles southeast of Charlotte.

A dispatcher at the Union County Sheriff's Office declined to comment.  No one at the Wingate Police Department immediately returned telephone messages seeking comment.

Campus officials issued the lockdown order about 6:15 p.m., instructing students to move to the nearest building and close and lock all doors and windows. The lockdown was lifted at approximately 8:30 p.m.
