7 shot and wounded near Oakland park, police say

OAKLAND, Calif. – Seven people were wounded Monday evening in a shooting that extended across several blocks in East Oakland, officials said.

Police responded to a report of a shooting between 96th Avenue and Olive Street — about a block away from the Verdese Carter Park and community garden — at about 6:08 p.m., police spokeswoman Johnna Watson said.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found a second shooting scene at 94th Avenue and Sunnyside Street.

Watson says seven people suffered gunshot wounds.

"This is really kind of outrageous," Oakland Police Chief Sean Whent told the Oakland Tribune, reacting to the brazen nature of the shooting. "Six o'clock at night isn't that late at night."

According to the Tribune, the victims were all men between the ages of 23 and 31. The injured were taken to Highland Hospital and Eden Medical Center, the paper said.

Two were said to be in critical condition while five others received minor injuries and were expected to survive.

There were no immediate reports of any suspects or arrests. It was not clear if any of the men were related or what motivated the shooting.

A 56-year-old neighborhood resident named Isabel, who declined to give her last name, told the Tribune that she was walking toward two friends outside a nearby corner store when she heard 10 to 15 shots ring out.

"A bullet went straight through my ponytail, cut right through my hair," she said. "I hit the floor."
