Police say a man was severely burned after he was set on fire while riding a public bus during evening rush hour in Northern California.

The Oakland Tribune says the driver of the AC Transit bus stopped the Line 57 bus to call for assistance after noticing the fire shortly after 5 p.m. Monday in Oakland. Several people exited the back of the bus.

AC Transit spokesman Clarence Johnson says the unidentified victim was taken to the burn center at St. Francis Memorial Hospital in San Francisco. Neither police nor Johnson could disclose the severity of his injuries.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have not yet released information about a possible suspect or motive.
