Federal authorities say they seized nearly $4 million worth of marijuana in southern Arizona during the federal government shutdown.

Tucson Sector Border Patrol officials said Wednesday that agents working during the 16-day partial shutdown confiscated more than 7,000 pounds of marijuana, 10 vehicles and illegal contraband.

Among the incidents were two separate marijuana seizures of 1,800 pounds each near Tat Momoli, Ariz.

During the shutdown period, agents at Tucson Sector checkpoints also encountered about a dozen immigrants trying to enter the U.S. by hiding inside vehicle trunks.
