Authorities say a police officer's gun accidentally fired during a school safety demonstration in Southern California and three children were treated for minor injuries.

Tamrin Olden, the Chino Police Department's crime prevention supervisor, says the gun went off at around 11:15 a.m. Wednesday during a safety presentation at Newman Elementary School in the city east of Los Angeles.

Fire Department spokeswoman Massiel Ladron De Guevara says three students were treated for cuts and scrapes but they weren't hit by gunfire.

Two were taken to hospitals and one was released to parents.

Other details of the incident remain sketchy. Olden says authorities are still trying to sort out what happened.

Police officers were on campus as part of Red Ribbon Week, a national event aimed at keeping youngsters off of drugs.
