Authorities say it's unclear why a man wanted on a domestic violence charge took his three children to a national park in northern Michigan where they were found after a 12-hour search.

The man from suburban Detroit was found at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore on Monday night with his 14- and 10-year-old daughters and his 9-year-old son.

His wife had filed the domestic violence complaint with the Emmet County sheriff's department the previous day.

Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich says the children had eaten nothing since Sunday morning. They spent the night in the woods at the lakeshore and were covered with mosquito bites.

Petoskey District Court says a magistrate will set the father's bond on Tuesday, but no court hearing will be scheduled until Wednesday at the earliest.
