A wind-whipped wildfire near Las Vegas has destroyed six structures at a desert ranch several miles from woodsy Mount Charleston hamlets where firefighters are protecting more than 400 homes.

It's not clear if any homes were destroyed.

U.S. Forest Service spokeswoman Suzanne Shelp says two firefighters have been hurt battling the Carpenter 1 fire.

There are 1,077 firefighters on the blaze that covers almost 40 square miles.

Containment dropped Tuesday to 10 percent.

Smoke from the fire about 25 miles northwest of the city has downtown and the Las Vegas Strip smelling like a campfire.

In northern Nevada, crews report 40 percent containment of the more than 40-square-mile Bison fire in the mountains near Gardnerville and Carson City.
