NEW HAVEN, Conn. – A Boston Red Sox fan who was harassed and stabbed through the neck by a New York Yankees fan at a restaurant in 2010 has been awarded $4.3 million by a jury.
Lawyers for victim Monte Freire (free-AYR') and the U.S.S. Chowder Pot III restaurant say the jury reached the verdict Thursday in his favor and against the restaurant, which is in Branford, Conn.
Freire's attorney, Timothy Pothin, says bartenders ignored warnings the Yankees fan was harassing other customers and trying to start a fight and continued to serve him alcohol. He says his 45-year-old client suffered life-altering injuries, including a brain injury.
The Yankees fan was convicted of assault and is serving a 10-year prison sentence.
The restaurant's attorney, Jan Trendowski, says he'll appeal.
