WASHINGTON – A bipartisan group of lawmakers has asked the Veterans Affairs Department to offer credit monitoring to veterans and dependents in its computer records.
That's because of data theft that could include personal information such as Social Security numbers.
The lawmakers are responding to testimony at a hearing where witnesses said foreign-sponsored organizations had successfully compromised VA networks. One former VA official said at least eight groups, mostly connected to the Chinese military, had hacked into the system or tried to. A VA official downplayed the threat but acknowledged one foreign-sponsored breach.
Florida Republican Jeff Miller is chairman of the House Veterans' Affairs Committee. He says businesses routinely provide credit monitoring when data may be compromised. He says it should be no different with the government.
