PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Rhode Island and the city of Providence have reached a settlement with the federal government in an investigation that found they were violating the rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
The settlement was announced Thursday and addresses violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act for about 200 people.
The U.S. Justice Department says people with intellectual and developmental disabilities were unnecessarily segregated at a city school and at a state-licensed employment program where they worked for long hours at low wages.
Under terms of the settlement, the city and state have agreed to over the next year help students prepare for what federal officials call "real jobs."
