Remains found in a remote area in Indiana, which some initially suspected may be those of missing college student Lauren Spierer, have been identified as belonging to another woman who vanished a year earlier.
Brown County Chief Deputy Coroner Earl Piper told FoxNews.com Thursday that the remains discovered belong to 26-year-old Kate McGrayel, who was reported missing in April 2010. The remains were found on private property by two women looking for mushrooms.
Piper said the identification was made through dental records. No cause of death has been released.
When the bones were found two weeks ago, authorities began investigating whether they belonged to women missing in the area, including Spierer, a 20-year-old student at Indiana University who disappeared without a trace in June 2011.
McGrayel, a graduate of Indiana University, was last seen leaving for a solo hike near her mother's home in Brown County. Her father, Jim McGrayel, of Nashville, Ind., told the Indianapolis Star that he believes his daughter died of hypothermia.
The remains were found less than a mile from where McGrayel lived with his ex-wife.
