PONTIAC, Mich. – The parents of a slain Detroit-area teenager are defending him and lashing out at his 75-year-old grandmother after she was convicted of second-degree murder.
Sandra Layne fired 10 shots, striking Jonathan Hoffman six times last spring. She claimed she acted in self-defense during a violent argument, but the jury found her guilty Tuesday.
Michael Hoffman says the verdict was "final vindication" for his son. Jennifer Hoffman says the 17-year-old is in heaven and that Layne, her mother, deserves prison.
The Hoffmans moved to Arizona, but Jonathan Hoffman was living with his grandparents in West Bloomfield Township while he finished his last year of high school.
Layne's defense attorney, Jerome Sabbota, says she's "devastated" by the verdict. She likely faces at least 14 years in prison.
