WHITESBURG, Ky. – Officials say 40 Pennsylvania college students on a mission trip to Appalachia had to be rescued from a mountain in Kentucky after they got lost while hiking.
John Caroulis (kah-ROO'-lys), a spokesman for La Salle University in Philadelphia, says one student remained in the hospital Friday morning as a precaution, but the rest of the group was released. All are expected to return as scheduled Saturday.
Caroulis says the students were spending their spring break in Kentucky with Habitat for Humanity.
Kentucky State Police trooper Tony Watts says the group was reported missing about 7 p.m. Thursday.
Mayking Volunteer Fire Chief Tony Fugate says they were found around midnight. He says the students waited too late to head back from their hiking trip and became disoriented when it got dark.
