Irish immigrant's remains reburied nearly 200 years, 3,000 miles from Pa. tracks where he died

PHILADELPHIA – The remains of an Irish immigrant who researchers believe was murdered while building a Pennsylvania railroad in 1832 will be reburied in his home country.

A missing molar helped to identify 18-year-old John Ruddy. He'll be re-interred at a cemetery in Ardara, County Donegal, on Saturday.

Those expected to attend the ceremony include Ruddy's relatives and U.S. historians who discovered his remains near train tracks in suburban Philadelphia in 2009.

Ruddy was among 57 Irishmen hired to help build a stretch of the Philadelphia and Columbia Railroad known as Duffy's Cut. Researchers say cholera killed most of the immigrants.

But forensic evidence indicates Ruddy and several others died of violent means, likely because of ethnic hatred or fear of the contagious disease.
