Man who disarmed gunman, woman who chased knife-wielding attackers, among new Carnegie heroes

An apartment complex clerk shot in the head. A boy stabbed by knife-wielding men. Teens struggling to stay afloat in the Pacific.

All of them rescued by individuals who risked their own lives to help.

The Carnegie Hero Fund Commission is awarding medals for valor Wednesday to 18 people, including four who perished in their rescue attempts.

The commission chooses medal recipients four times a year. The latest class of heroes includes a 21-year-old Texas man who managed to disarm a gunman who'd shot his co-worker, and a 64-year-old California woman who saved a boy from knife-wielding men.
