VISALIA, Calif. – Investigators say the man who shot his children, mother and uncles on a California Indian reservation used a .38-caliber revolver, but they don't yet know if he had a permit for it.
Tulare County Sheriff's officials released the information about the weapon late Tuesday.
They say Hector Celaya used it to kill four of his relatives and shoot and wound his 6-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter on the Tule River Indian Reservation near Porterville over the weekend. Celaya was killed in a shootout with deputies.
His 6-year-old and 5-year-old children remain hospitalized.
Investigators say Celaya had a history of methamphetamine use. They are conducting toxicology tests to determine whether the 31-year-old was under the influence of drugs at the time of the slayings.
They have not released a motive.
