Minneapolis police say a 2-year-old boy died after he was shot by his 4-year-old brother Wednesday.

Police responded to reports of a shooting in Minneapolis' Riverside neighborhood about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday. Responding officers found the 2-year-old with a critical gunshot wound.

The boy was loaded into an ambulance by emergency responders but died at the scene. His name has not been released.

MyFoxTwinCities.com reports that the 4-year-old was playing with a handgun he found in a bedroom when the shooting took place. Family members say the father kept the gun hidden on a shelf in the closet and aren't sure how the boy found it.

Sgt. William Palmer tells MyFoxTwinCities.com both parents were home at the time of the shooting. Three of the couple's children are now in protective custody.
