Family, friends and colleagues have started streaming into the funeral service for former U.S. Sen. George McGovern in Sioux Falls, S.D.

McGovern, a three-time Democratic presidential candidate, died Sunday. He was 90.

His funeral service is scheduled to start at 1 p.m. Central time. Family and friends started streaming in when doors opened at 11 a.m.

By 11:30 a.m., the middle sections were already filling up. Sommervold Hall at Washington Pavilion, where the service is being held, seats about 1,800 people.

Other people remained in the entryway of the pavilion, chatting and looking at photos of the former senator, including McGovern's great-grandson, Matt McGovern, who is scheduled to read a passage from the Bible during the service.

George McGovern will be buried in a private ceremony in Washington.
