SCRANTON, Pa. – The cash-strapped city of Scranton, Pa., will be able to make its full payroll this week, one pay period after it slashed pay to the federal minimum wage level for hundreds of workers.
Mayor Chris Doherty says workers will receive their full paychecks on Friday, totaling about $1 million.
Two weeks ago Doherty cut the pay of about 400 workers to $7.25 per hour, prompting a series of legal challenges.
Doherty has promised workers will be reimbursed for back wages but said Wednesday that won't happen in their upcoming pay checks.
Doherty and city council are locked in a dispute over a financial recovery plan. Both sides say they're trying to reach a deal by Aug. 1 to get $2.25 million in assistance offered by the state economic development officials.
