Chicago fake-bomb suspect pleads guilty

A Chicago man accused of placing a backpack he thought held a bomb near Wrigley Field has pleaded guilty to two weapons charges.

Sami Samir Hassoun admitted Monday that he took what he thought was a bomb and dropped it in a trash bin near the home of the Chicago Cubs. It was a fake device given to him by undercover FBI agents.

The 24-year-old Lebanese immigrant pleaded guilty in a deal with federal prosecutors to attempted use of a weapon of mass destruction and attempted use of an explosive device.

Hassoun was arrested in 2010 and remains in federal custody. His sentencing is Aug. 15.

The U.S. Attorney's office plans to recommend a 30-year sentence.
