Ex-NFL QB Ryan Leaf charged with four felonies

GREAT FALLS, Mont. – Disgraced former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf was formally charged with four felonies following allegations that he burglarized two homes to steal prescription drugs.

The ex-Charger was arrested twice in his hometown of Great Falls, Mont., in a matter of days at the turn of the month in relation to the separate alleged thefts.

He was first held March 29 on burglary, theft and drug charges after claims he stole pills of the sedative oxycodone from an acquaintance's home. The charging documents said Leaf admitted the theft before being released.

He was arrested again April 1 following claims he robbed a second address within two days of being freed on a $76,000 bond.

Two Great Falls residents said they returned home to find a man they later identified as Leaf inside the property. They reported him to the police after finding various prescription medications were missing.

Courts documents filed by the Cascade County Attorney's Office on Thursday -- and made public Friday -- left Leaf facing two counts of felony burglary and two counts of felony criminal possession of dangerous drugs, the Great Falls Tribune reported.

He remained jailed without bond while authorities decide whether his recent arrests in Montana violate the terms of his probation as a result of similar charges in Texas, which saw him handed a suspended sentence.

Leaf, 35, has been on probation since April 2010 after pleading guilty in Amarillo to seven counts of obtaining a controlled substance by fraud and delivery of a simulated controlled substance.

Leaf was the No. 2 pick in the 1998 draft behind Peyton Manning after starring at Washington State, but failed to make the grade in San Diego before retiring in 2002 at the age of 26, citing injuries for his decision.
