Workers have started clearing undergrowth and cutting away dead limbs with a goal of making Chippewa Square a safer and more desirable city spot.
The Savannah Morning News reports that tourists still seek out the park bench made famous in the movie.
Dave Knox, the city's park administrator, said the landscaping hasn't changed much in the past two decades.
Officials said Azaleas grew to about 12 feet tall and 8 feet wide over the years, and homeless people frequently crawled into the underbrush for extended stays. Officials said those plants and others will be trimmed
