A Connecticut father says he hasn't heard from his journalist daughter since a human rights group told him the young woman was being held in Libya, the Hartford Courant reports.

Robert Gillis of New Haven, Conn., said he received a phone call from Human Rights Watch informing him that his daughter, Clare, a journalist, was being detained by the Libyan government, according to the newspaper.

Gillis said he hasn't heard from his 34-year-old daughter since getting the news.

"We've been sort of waiting and watching ever since that point," he told the newspaper.

Clare Morgana Gillis, who has written for USA Today, The Atlantic.com and The New Republic, traveled to Libya to work as a freelance journalist.

Her father told the newspaper that he and his wife, Jane, have been monitoring media reports but have had difficulty verifying information.

"It's very tension-producing," he told the newspaper.

Ctnow.com reports that Gillis is believed to be one of at least four journalists being held by the Libyan government.
