Search for California Teacher Continues

Police are searching for a California teacher who went missing last week after apparently writing "Thank you everyone," on her classroom's blackboard, said officials.

Debra Schmitt, 53, who taught English at Terra Linda High School, in Ross, Calif., near the Bay Area, was well-regarded by her students and apparently left little evidence about where she was going.

"We don't have any leads," Sgt. Gianfranco Campa, from the Ross Police Department, told FoxNews.com. "We've searched her home and we're conducting interviews with some of her students."

He called the interviews with students "low key" because of the sensitivity of the situation. He went on to say there's no evidence of foul play.

Police have been searching San Francisco since Schmitt was reported missing on Jan. 20. They are currently combing the Golden Gate Park and nearby Lake Merced, because Schmitt is said to have a fondness for these locations and enjoyed hiking, said Campa

"It's very common for lost residents to be hiking trails in these areas," said Campa. "These are wide open spaces."

Schmitt's cousin Linda Czarnik told the San Francisco Chronicle that she had been going through a divorce and had lost three close relatives in the past year.

"We know it's been a sad time in our family," Czarnik told the Chronicle. "It's a heavy burden — on all of us — but for her to hurt herself? I just can't see it."

Campra, however, said there's no indication that she was depressed at the time of her disappearance.

Public records showed that Schmitt's husband, Stephen Smith, filed for divorce in Marin County Superior Court on Jan. 11, reported the Associated Press.

"We're conducting a thorough investigation," said Campa. "We're not working with much."
