South Carolina authorities say a woman admits to hanging a dog and setting it on fire for chewing her Bible, according to FoxCarolina.com.

Spartansburg officials say 65-year-old Miriam Smith admitted to killing her nephew's 1-year-old pit bull by wrapping an orange extension cord around its neck, hanging it from a tree and then lighting it on fire.

Smith allegedly claimed she killed the pet because it was a "devil dog" and that she was also worried that other children in the neighborhood would be bitten by the pit bull.

Officers found the dog's body under a mound of dried grass at Smith's home.

She has been charged with ill treatment of animals.
