OLYMPIA, Washington -- Washington state is banning alcoholic energy drinks after nine college students were hospitalized following a party last month.
The state Liquor Control Board adopted the rule Wednesday morning. It takes effect Nov. 18.
Authorities say the Central Washington University students at the party drank the caffeinated malt liquor beverage Four Loko.
Gov. Chris Gregoire asked the board to consider the ban. And Attorney General Rob McKenna has asked the Food and Drug Administration to consider whether such drinks are safe.
