A 22-year-old Kansas City man is charged with stabbing a community college dean in a building where Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon was to hold a news conference.
The dean, who was walking with other administrators at the time of the assault, was transported to a hospital where he remains in stable condition, according to the website. Nixon's speech was reportedly cancelled.
Jackson County prosecutor charged Casey Brezik with two counts each of first-degree assault and armed criminal action.
One of the charges alleges that Brezik also injured Mark James, chancellor of the Metropolitan Community Colleges system, as James came to Dimmitt's aid.
Witnesses say the suspect was "acting crazy" and had walked into a computer lab where the press conference was to take place, grabbing the microphone and saying, "check, check, check." He then ran out of the room and into the hall, where he allegedly cut the throat of the dean, the website reports.
The suspect, who was described as having demonic tattoos on his body, reportedly wrote symbols on a wall poster before the alleged attack.
"The administrator who was attacked this morning at MCC-Penn Valley has undergone surgery and has been listed in stable condition," the college said in a statement Tuesday. "The police are still investigating the incident and the north end of the Humanities building is currently closed."
