Iraq Is an American Problem

The joke of the week is that the U.N. is ready to roll up its sleeves and help the U.S. in Iraq.

It might be nice if the blue flag were flying over Baghdad again, but is anybody really thinking the U.N. is going to convince Muqtada al-Sadr (search) to stop causing a huge amount of trouble? Or convince the Iranians that it would be a good time to pull back the financing of Sadr's so-called army? Or close down the training camps built to train his army to kill Americans?

Answer... no.

The U.N. has been exposed as the outfit at the bottom of the Oil for Food scandal, where Saddam Hussein (search) bribed entire countries with oil that was supposed to be sold for food and medicine for his people.

Think the French would ever help? No. Think they would be welcome in Iraq because they opposed the war? No... the Iraqis that are shooting at Americans wanted the war. They wanted us to get Saddam out.

Like it or not, it's an American problem and the solution will be American... with some British help. Prime Minister Tony Blair (search) has said that Iraq is a historic mission, and he's right. Nobody said it would be easy, but it is important.
