ISLAMABAD – A government official says a homicide bomber has blown himself up close to a police station in the Pakistani capital, killing himself and one officer.
The blast late Monday was heard throughout downtown Islamabad.
Interior Ministry secretary Kamal Shah says a man detonated explosives at the gate of a police station close to a market.
He says an officer who was apparently challenging the attacker died in the blast.
There were no immediate reports of any other casualties.
Pakistan has seen a series of attacks by Islamist militants in recent years, including several in the capital.
Last September, more than 50 people were killed in a suicide truck bomb attack on the Marriott Hotel in the city.
