LA Auto Show: 2010 Ford Mustang

The 2010 Ford Mustang enters a world very different than the outgoing model did in 2005, and it has nothing to do with the economy or global anything.

Back then the Mustang was the only kid on the block. If you wanted a two-door muscle car, you talked to Ford. Now there’s the Dodge Challenger to worry about, and soon Chevy will be rolling out a brand new Camaro, so it was high time to make some changes.

The body was redesigned with more muscle and definition, while the interior is given a much needed upgrade with higher-quality materials replacing the overabundance of hard plastic that was the worst thing about the old car. The look is sharper, and everything feels more upscale.

Unfortunately, the major changes are only skin deep. The chassis and powertrains are mostly carryovers from the previous generation, but at least Ford took the best the parts bin had to offer.

The 315 horsepower V-8 engine and suspension are both derived from the special Bullitt-edition Mustang, considered the best performer of the breed. A V-6 is also available, and Ford promises they’ll be offering two optional superchargers for the V-8 that up power to 400 horsepower and 500 horsepower respectively.
