A man who police say was taking his clothes off while running through traffic has died after being hit several times with a Taser, police said Monday.

Police were called Sunday afternoon and said they used Tasers when he became combative, kicking officers and running into traffic.

The man, whose name has not been released until relatives are notified, died about an hour later at a hospital, said Rae Wooten, acting Charleston County coroner.

"We don't know if the Tasering had anything to do with his death," Wooten said. An autopsy was planned Monday.

The first use of the Taser had little effect, but the man was taken into custody after being struck a third time, police said.

A Taser delivers a 50,000 volt shock to immobilize people temporarily. The manufacturer,Taser International, has said its products are safe law enforcement tools.
