U.S. troops were in "the heartland of the beast" Monday -- fighting spatters of Iraqi defenders in Saddam Hussein's hometown of Tikrit.

Ground troops, backed by warplanes and helicopters, were reported in the center of the city as coalition forces tried to quash the last major stronghold of Iraqi resistance. Brig. Gen. John Kelly of the 1st Marine Division called Tikrit "the heartland of the beast."

"The beast is Saddam Hussein. If you were a committed regime murder guy, I guess you'd come here," he said. Kelly described what he called a pattern of behavior in cities that the coalition forces have taken over.
