Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” may have helped him win on the soccer field, but it won’t help him this time around.
In a 30-second video clip, which was leaked to Argentina’s press and posted online on Monday, the soccer legend appears to be striking his ex-girlfriend Rocio Oliva, who secretly filmed the attack on her cellphone.
The disturbing video, which first aired on Argentina’s “Nosotros al Mediodia,” shows a visibly intoxicated Maradona slurring his speech and questioning Oliva over her telephone – before physically confronting her.
“Stop! Stop! Stop hitting me Diego,” Oliva is heard pleading.
Maradona, facing a barrage of criticism over the video, spoke with Argentina journalist Marina Calabro and defended himself. He claimed that he was only slapping the cellphone from her hands, and not hitting her.
“Yes, I slapped the phone, but I swear that I have never lifted my hand against a woman,” he said in Spanish. “The episode started and ended right there. I admit slapping the phone, but there was nothing else. The situation did not go any further.”
The 53-year-old also seemed to inadvertently confirm that there are other videos like this one in existence.
“Which one?” Maradona reportedly answered to Calabro when asked about the video.
Maradona, who is one of Argentina’s most prolific soccer players in history, had a long history of violent meltdowns.
Earlier this summer he was filmed slapping a journalist for allegedly winking at his ex-girlfriend Veronica Ojeda.
