FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) New York Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan doesn't believe the team's success this season will be measured by whether or not it makes the playoffs.

Maccagnan, speaking to reporters Wednesday for the first time since training camp, says reaching the postseason is not a ''benchmark.'' But he also adds that the team is building to try to make the playoffs.

In the nearly 28-minute session with reporters, Maccagnan touched on several topics. He says coach Todd Bowles has done ''a very good job'' while leading New York to a 5-4 record.

Maccagnan is pleased with quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, adding that he ''has a lot of good football left.'' The GM acknowledged that quarterback Geno Smith has dealt with adversity, but says he has ''handled it well.''
