FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) New York Jets quarterbacks Ryan Fitzpatrick and Geno Smith each participated in early drills at practice, providing some hope that they could be available to play Sunday against Jacksonville.

Coach Todd Bowles is expected to update the status of each after practice Wednesday.

It is not certain if either would participate in full team drills, which occur after the 30-minute window during which the media can watch.

The right-handed Fitzpatrick is wearing a glove over his left hand after tearing at least one ligament in his thumb that will require surgery at some point. He was hurt on the first drive of the Jets' 34-20 loss at Oakland last Sunday.

Smith replaced him, but bruised his left (non-throwing) shoulder and his status is also uncertain.
